The planting of. a totara tree and an oak tr.ee side by side on the windswept slopes of Maungatautari Mountain, 10 miles from Cambridge, to symbolize the unity and friendship of the Maori and pakeha races, was a feature of an unusual service held to commemorate the work of a pioneer missionary, the Rev. A. N. Brown, afterward Archdeacon of Tauranga. The site chosen for this service was that of a former Maori village, Te Wera a te Atua, which was visited frequently by Mr. Brown between 1834 aud z 1850 The occasion commemorated was the missionary’s first sermon to the warlike Maoris of Maungatautari, preached on August 31, 1834.
