FAST WORK AT HAWERA

Vai Pere’s Tongue Injury Dominion Special Service. HAWERA, September 11. A good deal of fast work was done at Hawera this morning by horses engaged at Marton next week, 'lhe course proper was available along the back, with the going still on the heavy side. Vai Pere (Thomson) sprinted three furlongs in 40 2-5. Though he was not seen to advantage at Awapuni, there was an excuse for his defeats. While he was standing in his stall before his race on the first day a chain became caught in his mouth and it inflicted a severe tongue injury which bled profusely. Though it is healing well, his tongue is still badly cut. , Bayadeer (Holland) reeled off three furlongs in 39 4-5. She has improved since the New Plymouth meeting and may not remain long in the novice class. There was little between Cetewayo (Whero) and Le Marquis (McDonald) at the conclusion of a similar distance 40 4-u. Cetewayo showed signs of an early return by his second in the hack sprint at New Plymouth and he is thriving on his tasks. Miss Phaleron (Reilly) revealed plenty of pace in sprinting two furlongs in 25 1-5. She has not grown a great deal since last' season but has thickened out appreciably. Ring Chief (Holland) was not extended to run three furlongs in 39. He looks in great heart and promises to be near concert pitch by the Stratford meeting next month, which is likely to be his only outing before Trentham.
