CHIEF PIANO SOLO

Best Type Of Music Played FESTIVAL JUDGE’S PRAISE

■ It was a delight to him to see the young players taking up selections o the very best type of music, said Dr. J. Lyon, speaking last night at the Wellington Competitions Society’s festival in the Town Hall. He was commenting on the chief piano solo, which was won by the Christchurch pianist, Miss Rhona Thomas, who thus takes the silver challenge cup given by Kimmo and Sons, Wellington. Dr. Lyon re J marked that the winner’s technique was highly developed and she had-ji very graceful and attractive style. There was sincerity behind her playing and she had the ability to create atmosphere without fuss or bother. She had given a most engaging performance. Miss Kate Jourdain,. Wellington, who was placed second, had a musical temperament and on the whole her playing had been commendably accurate. The great thing about duet playing, said‘Dr. Lyon, was to make the two minds work as one, ami that was> what some of the performers that night had not succeeded in doing, though there ha'i been some very good work. Soprano Test Solo.

Discussing the periormuuces given by, the tniulists in the soprano test lor the Madam Evelyn de Mauuy Memorial Challenge Cup, Dr. Lyon said that the winner, Miss Doreen Udeh, Christchurch, had the right idea of interpretation, and there was well-controiied expressive variety of tone. Though «he had a small voice, it was of alluring beauty. Miss Tregurtlia, who was placed second, had a musical voice, and her word colouring was excellent. The winner of the contralto test solo, .Miss Noeliiie Death, Hawera, had a fine voice, said the adjudicator, and the words were delivered with the right enthusiasm and significance. Miss Phyllis Arscott, Christchurch, who was placed second, had a dramatic imagination and an artistic idea of interpretation, but needed greater control over production. Commenting on the character dance, under six years, and the dance duo, under nine years, the judge, Miss Constance Macdonald, Napier, said that dauees lor little children should be within the comprehension of the child, preferably with :• little story running through them. The winners in the dance duo section, Dorothy Jenness and Judith Watt, Lower Hutt, gave a delightful exhibition of a suitable arrangement for children under nine.

Shakespearean Test.

In announcing the awards in the me us Shakespearean test recital, Mr. Walter Russell-Wood said lie was grateful to the Wellington Shakespeareau Society tor donation of such handsome prizes for the Shakespearean classes. The competition, though small, had been very interesting, and of a fair standard. Most of the competitors were young students, and they would be well advised to build up then’ Shakespearean interpretations on a rhythmic foundation. All Shakespearean plays were written in iambic pentauieted and a little study would reveal the beauty and music of the words to the conscientious student. , The test was the soliloquy on sleep spoken by Henry IV and the spirit of soliloquy had been missed by some of the competitors. The winner had given a more rhythmic and subdued interpretation, capturing the moo(i of the speaker very well. . , , Mr. Russell-Wood also judged the humorous musical monologue. He said the work was not of a very high standard. ' The' musical accompaniments had been skilfully handled, but there had been a lack of spontaneous humour. Hie winner’s performance, however, had been very entertaining. A varied programme has been arranged for tonight, ineluding the chief piano volo winner and the winning competitor in the New Zealand test recital, women. There will also be the finalists in the musical monologue, the tap dance,, boys 9-12, the eccentric dance, under 16, and the poetic or classic barefoot dance, over 16.
