PROMISE OF BOY VIOLINIST

First In Open Class TWO COMPETITIONS SUCCESSES

“This competitor is a naturally/ z gifted.and promising young violinist, with splendid bow control and beautiful tone,” said Dr. J. Lyon, the vocal and instrumental adjudicator, commenting on the playing of Zane Bartlett, a young,Welling-’ ton boy who gained a remarkable double victory at Saturday’s session of the Wellington Competitions Society’s festival, by winning not only the Ava Symons Memorial Scholarship, for entrants aged from 12 to 16, but also the Ava Symons Memorial (open) Violin Sola in which he competed against'adults. Miss Kate Jourdain, who won the’ Robert Parker Memorial Piano.-Solo. * had, Mr. Lyon said, a sympathetic tquch and a keen appreciation of the value’of rhythm. Miss Joan Taylor, who gained second place, showed evidence of. a well-developed technique, • the tone was artistically controlled, but the playing was marred by one or two elementary errors. Mr W. P. Rollings, when commenting on the impromptu debate (open), held in the Concert Chamber, said that . the speakers were handicapped by the lack of a large audience, and as an, audience was the necessary adjunct, to the practice of public speaking, it was ’ difficult ot wax when ad- ; dressing empty chairs. The standard! was fairly high and.the speakers showed an admirable knowledge of the events of the hour in handling their subjects. The following are the results of classes judged on Saturday:
