CROONERS AND THEIR ILK
Niche For The Musical Hoi Polloi (Received August 31, 11.15 p.in.) SYDNEY, August 31. “Crooners fill ir niche for the musical hoi polloi, so I suppose they must be tolerated,” declared Dr. A. Burnard, adjudicator at the Sydney Eisteddfod which ended yesterday. "Crooners and their ilk are very'clever but they get on mj' nerves.” he said. “They distort notes, beats and vowels; in fact, seeing them in action is as bad as listening to them.” Dr. Burnard, however, disagreed with the statement of Dr. J. Lyon at the Wellington Competition Society’s festival that he regarded radio as the most dangerous disease of modern living. Dr. Burnard argued that radio was a boon to musicians who revelled in celebrity recitals in their own homes instead of having to attend them.
