SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK
Progress Of Construction
The progress of the construction of rhe South Island Main Trunk railway was referred to by the Minister of public Works, Mr. Armstrong, in a statement on Saturday. Rails would be laid to Kaikuuraon the north end of the South Island Main Trunk by Christmas, or perhaps earlier, said Mr. Armstrong. He expected that on the south end rails would be laid as far as Oaro shortly after Christmas. This, lie said, would leave a gap,of approximately 10 miles before Kaikouril was reached. Within this gap, said Mr. Armstrong, lay two rivers, both of which had yet to be bridged. Ouce these bridges were completed very little more time would elapse before the two ends were joined, since the line from there on tc Kaikouril followed easy country.
