RAILWAY CHARGES
Stabilization Scheme In
Britain
(Received August 29, 8.50 p.m.) LONDON, August 29.
To avoid a further increase in railway fares and freight charges the Government has concluded a new agreement with the railways guaranteeing them a fixed annual payment of £43,000,000, out of which the railways must pay 50 per cent, of all war damage. The old agreement guaranteed the railways a minimum revenue of £40,000,000, but covered them for war damage to a value of £10,000,000. The new agreement is part of the plan announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Kingsley Wood, in ’ bis Budget speech for the stabilizing of the prices off essential goods and services.
