LEND-LEASE POLICY

Isolationist’s Complaint

NEW YORK, August 28.

A leading isolationist, Senator B. K. Wheeler (Democrat), addressing an audience of farmers at Lacon, Illinois, said, that the people were united iu their resolve to avoid participation in a foreign war. He wanted the nation’s defence to be so strong that Herr Hitler would not dare to attack America. Senator Wheeler complained that the British need only’ come to America and select what they want and that “we even deliver it to their lands.” He asked: “Are we prepared to spend 10 to 15 billion dollars for England and Russia while the President coldly vetoes the Bill which would give American farmers a modest increase in cash income?” • There was much talk in Washington, he said, about the Lend-Lease administration being used for the purchase of champagne goblets, brandy, port and sherry glasses for British naval officers and about barrels of rum being paid for by the American LendLease administration.
