CLASH OCCURS
Minister And The Speaker
A clash between the Speaker and a member of the Government took place in the House yesterday., It occurred when the Minister of Housing, Mr. Armstrong, was criticizing the methods of the National Party, and at one stage Mr. Lee (Democratic Labour, Grey Lynn) intervened to support the Speaker. After attacking the membership campaign at the last, election of the National Party, Mr. Armstrong said they would use other methods. "You have only to listen to them in the House to know that nothing is too low down for them,” he said.
Mr. Speaker: The hon.' Minister will have to moderate his language.
Mr. Armstrong replied that the Opposition had also used terms that were not parliamentary. Mr. Speaker: Then it is the hon. Minister’s duty to call the attention of the Speaker. The Minister was proceeding to make a further statement, when he was told by Mr. Barnard that he must pay attention to the Chair and not persist. "I just wanted to point out that, you did not have to wait till somebody called attention to my Words,” Mr. Armstrong replied. Rising from his seat, Mr. Lee indignantly exclaimed: "A poor sport always howls at the referee.” “1 did not know there were two referees in the House,” retorted Mr. Armstrong and Mr. Lee was ordered to sit down.
