POLICY INVOLVED
Petition For Increase In Age Benefits
Stating that a question of Government policy was involved, the A to L Committee reported to the House that it had no recommendation to make on the petition of T. S. Jackson and 681 others, of Christchurch, asking for an increase in the age benefits and allowable income under the Social Security Act to meet ike increased cost of living.
Mr. Loe (Democratic Labour, Grey Lynn) said he regretted that the committee was not. able to report favourably. It seemed to him that the old jx-ople had at least a case for a 5 percent. increase in their allowance. As tnis was a matter of policy he trusted that the Government, instead of hardening its heart, would temper the wind to the old-age pensioners. “Of course, the member for Grey Lynn knows that, a question of Government policy being involved, the report of the committee is the correct one,” replied Mr. F. W. Schramm (Government, Auckland East). “I would not like it to be thought that the committee is not as sympathetic as the member for Grey Lynn.” Mrs. Stewart (Government, Wellington Westi rose to speak, but was ruled out as being too late.
