RED CROSS BASE IN MIDDLE EAST

A recommendation that the joint council of the Order of St. John and the Red Cross Society investigate the possibility of a New Zealand Red Cross base being established in the Middle East and staffed by New Zealanders, was made by the annual meeting of the Dominion council of the New Zealand Red Cross Society yesterday when it carried a remit from the Bay of Islands on the subject. The executive was asked to take into consideration a revision of the joint agreement with a view to enlarging the activities of a Red Cross, in an Auckland remit which was adopted. A suggestion from Wairarapa that to provide for distress as the result of fire, earthquake, flood or other circumstance, the relief distress fund be built up by contributions from the members of the society of 1/- a member a year, was referred to the executive for early consideration.
The following officers were elected: President, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes; vicepresident, Mrs. T. H. Lowry; Dominion executive, Dr. J. Leslie Will, chairman, Mrs. J. S. Watt, Miss E. M. King, Mr. C. G. White, Lady Wigratn, Miss I. McLean, Mr. Gibbons, Mr. G. T. Paterson, Canon R. G. Coats, Mrs. Harvey. The following were elected to represent the society on the joint council of the Order of St. John and Red Cross Society: Dr. A. Gillies, Ladv Wigram, Mrs. T. H. Lowry, Miss E. M. King, Messrs. J. Abel, G. T. Paterson, J. T. Spears, L. O. H. Tripp, E. C. Hale, Gibbons, J. Annand Smith, C. G. White.
