WAR VESSEL BREMSE
Name Recalled From Last War
The German ship Bremse,. which the Admiralty announced was hit twice by Fleet Air Arm bombs in Wednesday's raid in the Arctic, was a small vessel of 1250 tons displacement, built at Wilhelmshaven in 1932 as a gunnery training ship. A later vessel of a similar type, hut of 2410 tons, named Brummer, was built in 1936. Bremse and Brummer were the names of two light cruisers of 3SOO tons built in Germany during the last war. They were armed with Jour 5.J in guns and had a speed of o 4 knots. On October 16, 1917, these cruisers at tacked the Scandinavian convoy of 1merchant ships, escorted by the destrovers Mary Rose and Strongbow' and two armed trawlers. Both destroyers and nine ships of the convoy were sunk, lhe destroyers put up a gallant fight but were disabled early in the action by the superior weight of the German gunfire. The Germans gave the crews of the merchant ships no chance, to lower their boats, but poured their salvoes into them without warning. The enemv also deliberately fired on the survivors of the Strongbow. The Bremse and Brummer were among the German ships surrendered to the Grand Fleet on November 21, 1918. — (S.D.M.)
