New Hut Dedicated For Hutt Valley Branch

The dedication of a new hut for the Hutt Valley branch of the Y.M.C.A. took place on Thursday night, when the Birch Street hall, near Waterloo station, was formally set apart for Y.M.C.A. work by the president of the national council, Mr. C. R. Edmond, and declared open by the Acting-Prime Minister, Mr. Nash. In the absence of the mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. Andrews, through illness, Mrs. Andrews spoke of the value of the Y.M.C.A. in counteracting juvenile delinquency and invited residents to invest their money in the Y.M.C.A., which provided a gilt-edged security and a return in the character of the men of the future. Mr. Edmond, who represented the YjM.C.A. overseas during tflie Great' War, spoke of its work then and in the present war. He read a cablegram from Major-General Freyberg, thanking the Y.M.C.A. for its work in Greece, Crete, and at the base in Egypt. He thanked the Government, and specially Mr. Nash, for having granted the Y.M.C.A. £5OOO to enable the organization to function at the beginning of the war. The organization had 14 secretaries on service with the soldiers, four of whom were missing from Greece and Crete. It was doing a wonderful work in the prison camps in Europe.
