OWNERSHIP OF LAND AT BASTION POINT
Maoris Petition House
Ownership of an area of land at Bastion Point, Auckland, where the late Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, is buried, was raised in a petition presented by Mr. Paikea (Government, Northern Maori) on behalf of Ngapipi Reweti, of Orakei, Auckland, and 30 others. The petitioners claimed to he descendants of the original owners of the block known as Tokapurewha Battery, now Bastion Point. They held that the land was given to Queen Victoria by their elders in 1859 for defence purposes only, and that a condition was that should the Government cease to require the land for defence purposes, it should revert to the owners. The petitioners asked that the conditions of the deed of gift be adhered to. and that power be given the Native Land Court to investigate and make the necessary orders in favour of the original owners’ descendants.
