RED CROSS SOCIETY

Activities Of Wellington

Centre Praised

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Praise for the enthusiastic and successful work done during the past year by members of' the-Wellington centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society and the various sub-centres was given by the centre’s president, Dr. A. Gillies, and the chairman, Mr. Chapman, M.P., at the annual general meeting yesterday afternoon. Twenty-five out of 32 sub-centres were represented, and Ur. Gillies presided. . , i In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, Mr. Chapman paid a tribute to the harmonious working of the centre during the past year. The lied Cross movement, he said, had been more active during the past 12 months than ever before, everybody connected with the society having been imbued with the spirit of set vice to humanity and having worked with a will. .. “Thousands of students are receiving instruction from the various doctors and nurses, all under 'the banner of the Red Cross,” said Mr. Chapman. “The fact that 1700 students sat their examinations for the Wellington city subcentre alone during the past year indicates to some extent the vast number that must be taking instruction in the 32 sub-centres.” - The personnel of the Red Cross could claim that they had done all that was humanly possible to cope with any possible war emergency, he added, in congratulating the sub-centres on their various activities during the past year. Seconding the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, Dr. Gillies referred to the fact that the Wellington metropolitan area was the first in New Zealand to achieve its quota in the £250,000 sick and wounued appeal fund. On the appeal of the honorary treasurer, the whole of the Wellington province set out to double its quota, he added, and again the Wellington metropolitan area was the first to secure double its quota. That was an indication of the esteem in which the society was held by the people of Wellington and the Wellington district. Dr. Gillies said that it was also an indication that the work done by the members of the Wellington centre was painsaking, efficient and successful. The election of ' officers resulted as follows: —President, Dr. Gillies; chairman, Mr. Chapman; secretary. Miss TE. Lissington; hon. Mr. J. Annand-Smith: delegates to New Zealand council, Messrs. Chapman and h • S. Pope; trustees, Messrs. Chapman. Annand-Smitht and Mis*- ■ Dissington ; executive committee, delegates of the various sub-centres.
