“Weapons From Waste”
Sir,—Your correspondent “AntiWaste” has the right, idea, in. that "wajste is sabotage.” Perhaps there was , a time when saving waste metals and, paper was looked’ upon by many people. as just a patriotic 'gesture! Today It is much more than that—it is a patriotic necessity and every, scrap of use-' ful metal and paper, even empty-match box or cigarette packets or the used tram tickets, must be saved. “Anti-Waste” mentions £3OOO as the waste paper value of old ■ telephone directories aud that .the present issue asks subscribers to,destroy, old direc tories. . Actually the source of your correspondent’s information -regarding the, value was incorrect, £3OO is the figure and the word “destroy” does not mean burn, it means'“send to the War Waste Depot."' ■ On- this latter point the Wellington Junior Chamber of Commerce, which has organized the “Weapons from Waste” Exhibition, the closing date of which has been extended till Wednesdaj’. June 25, and which is now to tour the main centres of population in the Dominion, intends to suggest to the Government and to every newspaper and paper earton manufacturer that a small but prominent standard notice should appear on all such paper productions asking that when-its original value has ceased It should be saved and delivered to a Waste Depot so that it can again be utilized.' To save is n habit easily acquired and now vitally necessary. “Waste material is war material.”—l am, etc., E. M. BARDSLEY, Secretary. Junior Chamber of Commerce. ■ Wellington, June 21.
