WAVELL’S DEMAND
Surrender Of French Somaliland ( Received June 22, 7.10 p.m.) LONDON, June 22. The Vichy Government has sent a Note to Britain and the United States alleging that the British Commander-in-Chief in the Middle East, General Sir Archibald Wavell, under the threat of blockade, demanded the surrender of French Somaliland. The demand was rejected, resulting in a blockade which caused a famine in March and April. A British Official Wireless message states that General Wavell informed the Governor of Djibuti that he must make up his mind either to join the Free French immediately or openly dissociate himself from the pro-Axis policy which had been evident in Syria. In the event of a refusal to negotiate on this proposal, General Wavell has stated his willingness to evacuate the women and children from-Djibuti and meanwhile to supply them with milk and essential foods until evacuation is completed.
