HOME GUARD

Paid Officers To Be Appointed Paid adjutants, quartermasters and instructors are to be appointed to the Home Guard. Applications from men to fill the positions are now being invited. A neiv Home Guard office has been opened for the commander of No. 5 Area (Wellington), Major D. G. Johnston. This is in Brandon House. Mr. F. Andrews, a member of the G.P.O. staff, has been detached from the P. and T. Department, and has taken up duties with the No. 5 Home Guard Area Commander. Mr. Andrews has had considerable experience with the military and other Government authorities. He acted as a private secretary to the late Sir Joseph Ward, the late Major-General Sir Alfred Robin, Commandant of the New Zealand Military Forces, and to Major-General Chnytor, AdjutantGeneral of the Forces, the Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs (National Cabinet), Dr. Valentine, In-spector-General of Hospitals and Director-General of Health, . Commander Newton, Naval Intelligence Officer, General Pau’s French Mission, Professor Prince, Canadian fish expert, lhe late Rt. lion. Andrew Fisher, then Prime .Minister of Australia (during his visit, to New Zealand), the Hon. A. W. Holman, then Premier of New South Wales, and others. Mr. Andrews is the only son of the late James Frank Andrews, 1.5.0., formerly secretary to the Cabinet and Clerk of the Kxecutive Council, who during his career in the Public Service served no fewer than six Prime Ministers as private secretary.
