WARD ISLAND
Tree-Planting Expedition
A party visited Ward Island, Port Nicholson, on Saturday and planted some 200 pohulukawas, ngaios and other hardy trees suitable to the locality. The party was agreeably surprised to find that rabbits, which at one time had preyed on newly-planted trees, had been exterminated, and that the pohutukawas which were planted about three years ago, tvere now between three and four feet high. The visitors were also surprised at the good quality of the soil on the island.
The trip was made possible by the action of Mr. W. Smith, who placed his motor-yacht, Kotuku, at the disposal of the party, and he was cordially thanked.
Those who made the trip included Messrs. Bowie and McGill, members of the Ward Island Domain Board; Captain S. Holm (president), and Mr. R. L. Macalister (vice-president), of the Wellington Beautifying Society: Mr. J. G. MaeKenzie. director of parks and reserves; and Mr. G.
