SOROPTIMIST CLUB
Second Year Successfully Concluded The Soroptimist Club, Wellington, has now been established two years and will hold its second annual meeting on Thursday. 1 Membership is for professional women and, as the report states, a successful year has been enjoyed, despite difficult times. With many calls on people’s time and energies, it was gratifying to report that there were now 34 women on the roll of members. The club sponsors have a training assistance fund to assist school pupils and this fund was further developed during the year, having been augmented by efforts made by various members. A circular letter was sent out to all heads of secondary schools in the Wellington district, detailing the aims of the Soroptimist Club in undertaking its training assistance scheme and asking for the co-operation of teachers. Replies received were being considered, said the report, more particularly the ease of financial assistance needed by a Chinese girl student at a Wellington secondary school. During the year 23 meetings were held, also 10 executive meetings. One Wellington member visited the Soroptimist Club in Sydney during the year and was made welcome by members and it was stated that it was hoped to meet members from Sydney in Wellington at some future time when world conditions were happier than at the present. Many indications of interest in the club were received during the year from other clubs in the international federation. A club in the American federation, from Montgomery County, Maryland, has “adopted” the Wellington Soroptimist Club as its sister club and many letters, bulletins and other literature have been received.
