Street Day For Merchant Navy Today

The .Missions to Seamen 'rill hold a street day for the Merchant Navy today I and it is confidently hoped that, in spite of the many calls made on the public. ; a good response will he made. “It is true to say that the Merchant Navy plays a vital role in the carrying on of the war to a successful conclusion, runs a statement issued yesterday. “Io the men who serve in our ships the people of New Zealand, as well as the people in other parts of the British Empire owe a -reater debt than they can ever hope ; to pay in full. It is to the dogged en- ’ durance and courage of these men that we owe the safe arrival of our troops in the Middle East and the means by which thev are maintained there and it. is to them that we shall owe their safe return when the war is over. All guns, tanks, aircraft, fuel and food are ferried across bv seamen whose courage and devotion to duty will stand in history for nil men to marvel at. No campaign of terror —by sea or air—which the enemy is capable of using, will ever daunt them or cause them to turn back. Theirs is an heroic task heroically done, away from the limelight that floods the scenes of more spectacular warfare, a task, however, of supreme importance to the coming victory. ‘■[Teip ns to help our seamen —not as :i charity, in the accepted meaning. of that long-suffering word —but as a privilege and an honour. In addition to the street collectors there will bo well-stocked stalk situated at the D.T.C. and Kirkcalrlie ami Stain-s. There will be ampie supplies of moat ami poultry, and all abundance of homo made calms, pickles and jams. Bo your weekend shopping and at the same time help Un’ effort. ‘‘Many Wellington firms have kindly sent iu cheques to help the effort.
