Wellington Man Receives Military Medal
A New Zealander, Signalman R. AleKeague, who was in Australia when the war broke out trod enlisted in the A.1.F., was one of three A.I.F. soldiers to receive decorations for gallantry during operations in Libya which led to the capture of Benghazi. An official report, states that the three men were Signalmen K. Cliff. \V. Bruce and It. McKengue. They raced through a hail of bullets armed only witli revolvers and forced the officers and crew of an Italian battery to surrender, subsequently marching them back to AI.F. headquarters, 10 miles away, as prisoners.
" The three men had been sent two miles into the desert to lay a cable between battalion headquarters and the brigade. They were trying to find the brigade when they saw the Italian battery and immediately attacked it. Cliff received the D.G.51. and the other two Military Medals.
Mc-Keague’s parents are -Mr. and Mrs. W. McKeague, who live at 38 Sutherland Road, Melrose, Wellington. He was born at Castleclill, Wanganui, and was educated at the Marist Brothers .School, Newtown, and Sr. Patrick’s College. Wellington.
