Tibby Kitten

(Original by Jennifer Patch (13),

Masterton.)

JMBBY was a little kitten who lived in the garden shed with his mother and two sisters. One day when his mother was asleep he saw a good chance to escape. His sisters were playing in the corner, so he crept stealthily to the doorway, crawled under the door and ran through the gate and along the street. He walked on and on until every limb in his poor body ached, for it was the farthest he had been away from home, and as luck would have it, it started to rain. Now along this lane there was a big grey house and in it lived a little girl with her rich parents. This little girl’s name was Marjorie. She had everything a child could wish to have, but this little girl was not happy, for she was never allowed to go out by herself, and as it was a wet day she was a very sad girl indeed. That morning her father had asked her what she wanted for her birthday and she said a kitten—but her mother did not like cats, so she was not allowed to have one.

So it happened that this kitten saw the gate open and seeing its chance rushed to the door to see if it could get shelter. It started to scratch on the door and this little girl hearing the noise rushed down to see what it was. What a sight met her eyes! A poor little kitten all wet and shivering with the cold. Majorie carried it in her arms to her mother who also felt sorry for the little kitten. When the kitten got well again she asked her mother if she could keep it. and her mother said, "Yes,” for she liked Tibby very much indeed.
