Diplomatic circles in Vichy believe that the Vice-Premier. Admiral Darlan, who yesterday returned to Paris secured from Herr Hitler an arrangement to replace the armistice which would liberate Paris and give the Vichy Government four-fifths of France but re? tain for Germany (he coal and iron mines on the north and west coasts, and all river mouths.
Today Marshal Petain had a lengthy conference with Admiral Darlan, after which it was officially announced that the Cabinet will meet tbday to discuss the terms the admiral has brought from Hitler. ASSISTED BY FRENCH BASES How German Army Reached Libya (Received May 14, 7 p.m.) LONDON, May 13. The German troops and mechanized units were transported to Libya with the assistance of Vichy, says the Lisbon correspondent of the “News Chronicle.” The movements of troops began on February 6, and it was carried out gradually by ships and planes from numerous bases, including French as well as Italian ports.
Thirty-five thousand troops were carried by air from the Marignaue aerodrome, near Marseilles, where they were assembled secretly. Heavy material, believed to be enough to equip five armoured divisions, was concentrated at Marseilles and Toulon (France), Genoa, Leghorn, Naples (Italy) and in Sicily and was transferred by ships to Libya. Ships from France and northern Italy at night crossed west to Bizerta to avoid British patrols which were watching the Sicilian Channel from the east side. By this means 124 ships reached Tripoli, using French territorial waters. U.S.AJ AGAIN WARNS FRANCE LONDON, May 14. It is reported'.from Vichy that Admiral Leahy, the United States Ambassador, yesterday warned- Marshal Petain against supplying Germany with any military aid. The report says the warning was given during a 60-minute conference before Admiral Darlan returned from his visit to Herr Hitler.
