KARORI PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION

Tramway And Stormwater

Problems

Overcrowding in trams, tram sections, and stormwater drainage were the main topics discussed at the twenty-first annual meeting of the Karori Progressive Asoeiation on Thursday night. The mayor, Mr. Hislop, said they could rest assured that the tram section problem would be adjusted in the immediate future. Karori, Northland and all parts of the city would be put on the same basis. The overcrowding was because of the labour problem. Additional rolling stock had been built for the Exhibition, and there was a fine service of cars,, but the award did not allow for the occasional extra time necessary to run extra trams at rush hours.

Mr. W. Appleton thanked the association for their co-operation. He spoke of the usefulness of such an association, and said Karori had one of the best. The stormwater trouble was caused largely by the great area of sealed roads, whicli did not hold the water, and the configuration of Karori, but an adequate service, either of culverts or open drains, would cost £70,000, and he was making no promises in time of war. Speaking of the tramway problems, he said a little elasticity in working conditions would be the solution. The 40-hour week would not be endangered, as it would be only a war measure, but a certain section of the men swayed the majority away from any cooperation. However, negotiations were still proceeding. Women conductors would uot .be employed if the department could possibly get through with men. Officers were elected as follows:— President, Mr. IV. Sehierning; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. W. Simm, H. L. I’. Dyett, H. S. B. Fletcher, G. F. I’enlington, B. G. H. Burn, C. S. Plank, A. F. Wiren, M. Burnett, A. J. Jeffs. B. R. Webster, M. IV. E. Shore, G. S. Amos; executive committee, Messrs. C. R. C. Robieson, A. B. Hamilton. A. L. Hurdley, H. B. Shepherdson. A. Withey, P. Allen, W. H. Stevens, P. R. Hanna, and 'R. H. Lewis: secretary and treasurer, Mrs. G. ,M. Austin ; hon. auditor, Mr. G. J. J. Fell,, F.I.A.N.Z.
