A CAKE FOR MOTHER

(Original, by Snow Fairy (11). Takapan.) TT was Mother’s Day, and of course X Jumbo Gee wanted to give bls mother a pt esent, so he lay thinking very hard in his little bed. Then he thought of a splendid idea. In case he should forget, he jumped out of bed and dressed as quickly as he could, forgetting to comb his bobby tail. All through breakfast he was very silent, and while he was drying the dishes he thought of a way to get his mother out of the house for an hour. The work was clone and Jumbo Gee said to his mother: . “tVhy don’t you pay a surprise visit to Aunty Sarah?” “That is a grand ideir, Jumbo. 1 will finish the work and go,” said Mrs. Gee, taking off her apron. Soon she was hoppint: down the road with an umbrella under one arm and a basket containing it bunch of carrots and three lettuces in lie; paw. As soon as she was out of sight Jumbo ran to the cupboard and took down the flour jar, then some sugar and butter. He set to work to make a cake. Of course he knew nothing about it. and tipped in far too much soda. He turd turned on the electric stove, but knowing nothing whatever about reading the thermometer, the oven was too hot, but io he popped the cake.

Thinking be heard his mother returning, he opened the oven door and bang went the cake to the bottom of the tin. Anyway he hoped all was well and closed the door again. When Mrs. Gee came home she was very surprised tc see the table set and a hot cup of tea waiting for her. “Why, Jumbo,” she said, “how kind of you to think of this!” “It’s Mother’s Day,” he said, "so I made you a present.” (Poor Mrs. Gee. She was pleased with Jumbo’s kind thought, but oh, that cake.)
