HUTT VALLEY CHESS CLUB

The annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Chess Club was held this week, 17 members being present. The outgoing president, Mr. J. W. Wood, occupied the chair. Mr. J. R. Cletnas presented the balancesheet which showed a small profit on the year's transactions. The annual report stated that Mr. W. A. Fisher had scored a double success, winning the club championship and also tlie qnntial handicap tourney for the J. W. Mood Cup. Mr. A Sutherland was the runner-up tn both tourneys, and he was therefore the first holder'of the handsome trophy donated by Mrs. Wilson. Dr. R. A. Bakewell, the late Mr. G. Wigham, and Mr. M.. A. Fisher had each held the club championship twice, while Messrs. J. Ottaway, K. Gilkison, I. Rawnsley, R. S. Kent, and tlie late IC. V. Blazek had each held the title once. As winners of the annual handicap event. Messrs. S. Jennings and W. A. Fisher hail each held the J. M. 'Wood ('op twice, and Messrs. L. C. King, R Gilkison. G. L. Giesen. J. W. Wood, mid Mrs. Wilson hud ench held it for one The election of officers resulted as follows: —President. Dr. R. A. Bakewell: vice-presidents, Messrs. J. \\ . Mood and M’. F. O'Shaughnessey; hon. secretary, Mr. J. R. Ulemas (Nai Nai Road); mulch committee. Messrs. Doile. Hansford, and M’ood; general committee, Messrs. Giltrap, Doile. and S. Jennings, with the officers ex-officio; hon. auditor, Mr. M*. Toomnth ; delegate to league, Mr. J. M'. M’ood; publicity officer, Mr. M’. Giltr.'ip. It was decided to enter teams for the league's A grade and B grade competitions. The club's nominees for the league’s ehanipion-oL'-ehmni>ions tourneys are M'. A. Fisher (A griqle), mid M’. Giltrap (15 grade). Trophies for the ensuing season have been donated by Mrs. M’ighmn. Dr. Bakewell, and M’. Giltrap.
