STEEPLECHASE TO RIOTOUS

Egmont First Day FRIESLAND’S McRAE CUP

Circular Note Scores

Dominion Special Service. HAWERA, May S. The winter racing season opened at ' Hawera today, when the Eguionl Racing Club held the first day of its steeplechase meeting. The weather was line and the track in easy condition, but good for winter going. The Egmont Steeplechase was won by the veteran Riotous, who jumped solidly all the way without making any mistakes. The Mcßae Cup went to au outsider in Friesland, and Circular Note oeored an attractive win in the Hawera Handicap. The totalizator bandied £10,481/10/-: compared with £15.172 on the opening day last year. Au inquiry into the running of Minority in the Hawera Handicap was opened and adjourned till Saturday. A. E. Lord, rider of Aussie Ra in the Egmont Steeplechase, was lined £5 for careless riding. Favourite’s Bad Showing. Parekura, favourite for the Tougahoe Hurdles, made an inglorious showing, tailing the field IhiJoiighouL The face was won by the Waverley winner Mataroa. who trailed the leaders until the final half-mile, where he took charge with Rollicker. Mataroa crossed Rollicker at the last fence, but it did _ not affect the result*, as Mataroa finished very easily to win by two lengths from Eupatrid, who came on strongly at the close after malting u faulty jump three fences from home. ■ Rollicker was third, and Segra fourth. Tidewaiter was a long way back fifth, failing to hold a good position. Comfortable Win. Eattlegain scored a comfortable win over the hack sprinters in the Telegraph Handicap. Beginning well, he was quickie in charge, and he never looked like forfeiting his position. Ringling, Tavoy, Desert Tide, Ocean Breeze and Night Ray were prominent in the bunch which chased Battlegain to the straight, at which stage Battlegain and Ringling went well clear of the others, but Battlegain had only to be kept going fo win by a comfortable length. Tavoy beat the others home for third money, with Ocean Breeze fourth, and then Valiant Lady. Tau-uru. La Rosita and Desert Tide. Winner’s Good Run. Circular Note scored a decisive win in the Hawera Handicap, for which he was favourite. Endorsement, Veldette and Grandora piloted file held into the straight, and at the distance Veldette had the other pair beaten. Then SurveyorGeneral, on the rails, and Night Eruption, on the outside, lodged claims, but iu the last furlong Circular Note, who lay well back in the early running, came with th'- | last run and won going away by a length ; and a half. Surveyor-General held second j money by a neck only from Veldette, and i Night Eruption was a neck back fourth. •

Solid Jumping Display.

Riotous won the Egmont Steeplechase easily from Ruling Star, but his two most serious opponents, Bridegroom and Chat, eliminated themselves two fences from home, falling at the sod wall when try iug to reach Riotous, who gave his usual solid display of jumping. High Peer led with Riotous for a round, but on the last circuit Riotous made play until joined by Bridegroom and Chat. But they hung on to him for two fences only, both blundering at the sod wall. There Tigretern also fell. This left Riotous well clear of ihe others, and he won by 10 lengths from Ruling Star. Aussie Ra looked assured of third money when Dozie Boy. finishing very fast, cut him out on the .post, .... Easy For Sunny Kuiglit,

Repeating his Wanganui and Waver- !•.•}■ performances, Sunny Knight proved himself the smartest scurry horse in tin province by leading from barrier rise in the Hack Scurry Handicap, and increasing his lead in the straight to win easily by five lengths. The real race was for second and third money, and in a keen contest Salvation and Parlato took the honours, with Krieinhild, Verulam, and Squeers in line and close up. Krieinhild and Squeers both had to make up ground. Mcßae Cup Surprise.

Friesland, at odds of more than a score, finished with all his oldtime dash to win the_ Mcßae Cup. Boden Park and Alexcelia were the pacemakers over the final six furlongs, with Sir Crusoe, Gay Fox, Friesland, Trench Law and Authoress following iu close order. At the last furlong Last Acre, Authoress and Gay Fox aJJ held good chances, but Friesland then came through the field to reach the front. Last Acre hung on to him but Friesland got the verdict by a neck. Authoress finished a little too well for Gay Fox, taking third money, and after Gay Fox came Aurora’s Star, Alexcelia, Boden Park, Piastre and Sir Crusoe. 'Narrow Win. f. Marquis scored a narrow’ but decisive win iu the Tawhiti Handicap. He trailed Ghana' Lass to the distance ami then ran past her to win all out by a short length. Phyto, well back in the early running, camo on well at the finish to reach third place just ahead of Miss Clipper, who with Valtour went with the two leaders to the turn. Israel finished well just out of a place and next to arrive were Israel, Arabic. Sanction and Wildfire. ’ Natal was well up early but started to drift in the middle stages of the race. Vai Pere went another poor race. Details Of The Racing TONGAHOE HURDLES HANDICAP, of £175. One mile and a half. 2/1 MATAROA. M. Millar’s blki- g.. 6yrs., by Ollatrlm—Glow, 11.0 (A. E.
