The effect of the war on the Australian nmtor industry is reflected in a fall of ■foso ins jn the profit of General MotorsHoldens, Ltd., for the year ended December 31. from £703,412 to £451,304. In 1937 the company earned a record profit of £1,005,71 3. Ordinary dividend is 20 per cent., requiring £350.000, compared with 4-> per cent, in the previous year, requiring £757.500, and with 55 per cent. 111 - Preference dividend of 6 per cent., absorbing £33.(310, is covered more than 13 times by net profit, which is struck after providing £142.509 for depreciation, and an undisclosed sum for income tax. Lhe sum of £04.502 is carried forward, against £230.350 brought into the accounts. Although the volume of sales in 1940 was less than that of the previous year by only 9$ per cent., the directors state that profil was 36 per cent, lower. 'I hey consider that the result is satisfactory tinder prevailing conditions.
