Art Not In Eclipse

The Wellington Sketch and Studio Club held its annual meeting recently when the following officers were elected: President: Prof. J. Shelley, vice-presi-dent: Mr. C. T. Laugesen, secretary: Air. Stanley H. Edwards, treasurer: Miss N. Maudsley, committee : Mr. H. P. Wrigley, Mr. J. ileginbottam. Mr. AV. S. Oakley, Mrs. E. Boyes, Miss M. Mills. The balance-sheet showed a satisfactory credit. The annual report said that despite difficult times the activities of the club were being carried out as usual and a comprehensive programme had been pursued through the year. The programme included 2-1 lectures and criticisms by the ’best of Wellington's artists. The membership increased considerably during the year, the total membership being now over eighty, though many of the younger men are now. serving in the forces overseas. '

The club extended its congratulations to tlie Government on the interest, it hud shown in the art. of the Dominion by arranging for the recent centennial exhibition of New Zealand art by the publiifk lion of ‘'Art am] Letters of New Zealand” and the recent arrangement of an exchange of New Zealand and American art. but regretted that the Government had not seen fit to appoint an official war artist. The club had gone into the question of procuring an official statement from the Government about the prohibited sketching grounds.
