HASTINGS, May 7. Building in Hastings over the past year has shown a substantial decrease, according to the annual report of the building and health department of the Hastings Borough Council. The number of houses erected dropped from 66 to 47. The report of the matron of the women’s rest, Mrs. K. Hagenson, stated that there were 73,375 visitors, of whom 53,310 used the rest and 20,165 the Plunket rooms. There was a credit balance of £44.
The librarian, Mrs. 0. Z. Skipper, reported that there were 1997 subscriber* against 1848 a year ago. Receipts totalled £llO9. against £lo2]. A total of 1912 books were purchased, and 1219 discarded, leaving 10,685 on the lending shelves, an increase of 564.
It was reported by the superintendent of reserves. Mr. J. G. C. Mackenzie, that there were 300 birds of 38 species in the zoo. From the nursery 24,056 bedding plants were raised, 585 trees were planted out, and there were 1084 trees and shrubs in stock. At the motor camp there were 510 parties who paid fees totalling £l9O. Some 310 parties stayed for a week or longer, this being the highest percentage of extended camps on record.
