HARRIER RUNS IN BAD WEATHER
Driving rain and a strong wind made the going heavy for Wellington harriers on Saturday afternoon, but most of the clubs held their weekly runs. Scottish Club— The club held its two and a half miles novice handicap race, which was won by A. Pay, who, off 45 seconds, ran a well-judged race to cover the course in 16.25. A colt, D. Cottingham, off 75 seconds, took second place, and N. Everett was close up third. Brooklyn Club.— Despite the adverse weather conditions, 22 members, 16 of whom were juniors, turned out at the Island Bay Surf Club’s sheds for the weekly run, which was of about 4J miles. Leading up Brighton Street on to the top of the hills behind Houghton Bay, the trail led down into Newtown, through Russell Terrace, back along The Parade to the sheds. De Lacey is showing signs of an early return to his old form, both he and Falloou putting in a very nice run. Colin Dickie had his first run this season, and was elected to the position of club captain in place of G. Appleby, who has gone into camp. A number of young women supporters of the club generously supplied afternoon tea at the sheds after the run. Victoria College Club. —Fourteen Varsity runners turned out to a mud-scramble at Johnsonville on Saturday. The two packs ran over the hills into the Ohariu Valley, and back to Johnsonville round the Makara road. R. Hunt and T. Sewell were the best of the slow pack, led by R. Daniell. F. D. O’Flynn, leading the fast pack, set a brisk pace, and I. D. Morton and P. Anderson were prominent in the early stages. On the road, however, Scrymgeour and Rowberry went to the front, with P. Anderson close behind at the finish. Methodist Club. — The club held a sixmile run from the Thorndon church. Several new members were in attendance, and a run-in over the last half-mile resulted as follows: E. Patterson, 1; F. Kerslake, 2; I. Sweetman, 3. Wellington Club.— Despite the weather more than 20 runners turned out for the invitation run of Mr. J. Drawbridge at Worsen Bay on Saturday. After a fivenrile run, a half mile run-in was held and resulted in a win for C. Pocock. with J. Matthews, second, and N. Radford, third. Presbyterian Club. —The club held its run on Saturday from St. John’s. Twentytwo members were sent off in two packs over a road trail of 44 miles. The number of new members is encouraging, and among these 3. Rapson, D. Ross and R. Jamieson are showing good form. Next Saturday’s . run will be from Trinity Methodist Church, Wellington South. Hutt valley Club.—Hutt Valley harriers accepted an invitation from Mr. G. Readon to the Y.M.C.A., Petone, on Saturday. Twenty runners set off in three packs over a four-mile course. The fast pack overtook the slow and meduinx pack coming down the last stretch of Udy Street. Of the fast pack O. Anderson, R. Robbie and L. Brunitte were too good for the others. In the medium pack C. Ne tvlands, R. Furness and T. Rogers were the best. The best of the slow pack were K. Russell, V. Lovatt and T. Hurly. Next weekend’s race will see runners like M. Paterson. T. Shaw, G. Reardon and K. Robbie to the fore. Other runners who are showing promise are N. Richards. L. Mallowes and G. Jenkins. The members of the women’s committee served afternoon tea, which was enjoyed by all. On Saturday next, at the Hutt Park, two races will be decided, the novice and president handicaps.
