POPULAR WIN FOR AMIGO

Waver ley Meeting

STEEPLECHASE WON BY HORNPIPE

Dominion Special Service.

HAWERA, May 5. In spite of being sin off-day. there was a fair crowd at the Waverley meeting today, when the totalizator handled £10,527 10/-, compared with £15,091/10/- on the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £4264. The weather cleared- nicely after the boisterous weekend, and the track was in god order, with the sting out of the going. The top weight. Amigo, won the main event, the Besley Memorial, after finishing third in the open sprint, earlier in. the day. Hornpipe, an inmate of L. Knapp’s stable, created a good impression as a ’chaser in winning the Waverldy Steeplechase. Though several outsiders scored, none of the win dividends exceeded double figures. , Easy Win.

Mataroa was«preferred to Rollicker in the Westholm Hurdles, and after being in fourth place past the stands and along the back he took charge across the top to run on and win as he liked. Eupatrid and Rollicker disputed the early lead,.but while Rollicker tired badly, Eupatrid ran his best race for some time. War Lap had every chance, and just held off Seikirk by a head for third. Air Shot was pulled' up. Pekoe paraded fairly big, and the outing should improve him.

Beaten On Post. Black Robe attempted to win the Wiiroa Handicap all the way, but went under in the last few strides. She began brilliantly, to be clear into the straight from Endorsement, Footloose. Screen Star, and Lord Cavendish, with Amigo fairly well back. Endorsement set off after Black Robe at the distance, and got up to score going away. Amigo finished fast to beat Lord Cavendish for third, and Screen Star and Hagen headed the others. Valerian missed the jump out. Filly's Success. The Rotorua-trained Desert Tide, a three-year-old filly by 'Tide Race, won the Svmes Memorial decisively. Gallarda and Desert Tide were the smartest into their, stride and they held charge into the straight from Te Oriko, Hinehou and Chef d’Ouvre.' Coming fast, on the outside, Desert. Tide ran on solidly to score from Clief d’Ouvre and Ringless, who.was badly placed early, finished very well to get up and beat Te Oriko. Then followed Lucky Lulu, Gallarda-and Sunfire. Young Charles Scores. Making his first appearance since Christmas, Young Charles led, all the way in the Kohi Highweight to score at a very handy price. lie was attended along the back by Valtour, Minvaal, Baron Bold and Tavoy, there being little change into the straight. Young Charles never looked like being caught in the run to the post and two outsiders in Natal and Gitana Lags had a keen set-to for the minor places. Natal prevailing by a head. Tavoy, who appeared likely at the distance, drifted into fourth place, clear of Valtour, Minvaal and Wildfire. Win at Second Start. In his second start of the day- Amigo registered a fine performance to win the Besley Memorial handsomely. SurveyorGeneral and Last Acre made most of the early running front Ned Cuttie, Amigo, Windsor Chief and Trench Law. Amigo moved forward approaching the straight and once in liue for the, post he went away to score a very popular success. Alexcelia emerged from the ruck with a strong run to take second money from Last Acre, who held off Boden Park narrowly and then followed Surveyor-Gen-era] "and Trench Law. Friesland struck trouble early and never recovered, while Alexcelia appeared unlucky and should soon make amends. Promising Chaser.

Though his latest form as a hurdler has been only mediocre, Hornpipe created a good impression as a likely chaser when lie easily defeated the favourites Kaiwaka and Aussie Ra in the Waverley Steeplechase. Kaiwaka and Aussie Ra led past tlie stands and they drew away to be clear of Car Leaf, Karere-nui, Riotous and Hojnpipo along the back. With two fences to go Karere-nui went after the leaders but soon tired and Hornpipe then made a fast forward move which carried him to the front nt tlie final obstacle and he won with something in hand by three lengths. Kaiwaka was a similar distance in front of Aussie Ra and Karere-nui was fourth, with gaps to Ruling Star, Gold Nut and Riotous. High Peer fell at the first of the stand double. Overdue Win. Well handled by the stable apprentice. J. Hastie, Talenta scored an overdue win in the Ngutuwera Hack Cup at good odds. Ringcraft, Talenta and Mountain Fox were most prominent in the rush for early positions from Tan Uru, Acrobat, Gohl Card and Vai Pere. Ringcraft and Talenta showed the tVay to Aerobat. and Mountain Fox into the straight, with Le Marquis, who was badly left, handy on the outside. Over the concluding stages Talenta ran. on too well for Mountain Fox who easily accounted for Acrobat. Tau Uru was fourth and tl(on followed Arabic, Gold Card and Vai Pere. The win favourite Katesbridge was never sighted. Sunny Knight Spreadeagles Field.

Sent out a less than even money favourite, Sunny Knight spreadeagled the field in the President's Hack Handicap. He hit the front at the end of a furlong and went away to win easing up by eight lengths. Calliope was always in second place and Barry Boy just got up to defeat'Taitama. Teasof and Star Mark, who was left, were next. Details Of The, Racing WESTHOLM HURDLES, of £125. One mile and a half. j/l MATAROA, 10.10 (A. Lord) 1 3/3 EUPATRID, 11.0,.. (G. P.
