ANZACS RETURNING TO EGYPT
Reception By Y.M.C.A.
CAIRO, May 3.
The National Patriotic Fund Commissioner and the Y.M.C.A. have given the fullest co-operation in facilitating the reception an'd clearance of New Zealand troops returning from Greece. Contributors to the Patriotic Fund will be pleased to know to what good purpose the money they gave is being employed. '
Troops are returning in the best of spirits. Man for man they are confident of their own superiority over the German. At the wharves they were met by a reception staff and the Y.M.C.A. After having a hot drink and some food, they proceeded to a clearance camp, where they were quickly 'drafted into their old units. In this clearance camp the Anzac spirit prevails, for the Australian and New Zealand staffs do all they can to help each other’s troops. The ,men receive blankets, immediate clothing requirements, and food and rest. After a brief spell they- proceeded by rail to the base camps. The people of New Zealand need have no apprehensions about their boys on the morning after their arrival at the clearing camp. I saw one company of machine-gunners already cleaning the guns which they ha'd saved — guns which had taken such a terrible toll of the German invaders. As you moved around among the troops you got the same impression everywhere—a quiet determination to have another smack at the Hun.
Aucklanders will be proud to know' that the Auckland Battalion was the last to leave I’elopennese, and that so great was the slaughter that this rearguard inflicted that their embarkation was comparatively unmolested.
