IMPRESSED RIFLES
Portion Of Owners In
Home Guard
Reference to the position of owners of .303 service rifles already using them for Home Guard purposes was made yesterday by the Minister of National Service, Mr. Semple. He said that in the meantime every .303 rifle would be automatically impressed. That meant that Jhe rifles would be ip the hands of the Government. If active members of the Home Guard desired to retain possession of their rifles, they would be able to do so as long as they remained active guardsmen,” said the Minister. No decision, however, had been made which would enable owners to nominate persons to have the exclusive use of their rifles. As a general rule, the idea was to get as many Home Guardsmen as possible trained with the rifles available. To allow the owner of a rifle to say that a particular Individual should have the exclusive use of his rifle might tie the hands of the authorities, because it would limit unnecessarily the training of a large number of men. If, on the other hand, there wore 50 rifles available in a' Home Guard unit without restriction as to use, it might be possible to give 300 men musketry training with them.
