Funds For War Purposes
Sir, —At the commencement of this war I suggested in your columns that the whole of the money required for the conduct of same, and other patriotic purposes, should be raised by the Government by means of taxation. But instead of this being done we have apparently dropped back into the same methods of collecting the necessary finance which were adopted during the Great War. I pointed out that, together with the establishment of a National Government, the course suggested would have created confidence and equality or sacrifice among all classes of the people. I was pleased to note that just the other day a letter advocating that all funds for. patriotic purposes should be raised by taxation was forwarded by the Masterton District Patriotic Committee to the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council. The council decided to refer the letter to a conference to be held next month. The Wairarapa people are noted for their generosity and liberality, and, therefore, coming from them, such a proposal deserves strong support. If this course were adopted a great deal of overhead expense could be saved. We all know the war has to be won at all costs, and provided everyone contributed fairly and the money raised from time to time was spent wisely all would be satisfied, and it our Prime Minister was able to announce that a National Government had been formed for the duration ot the war, what a splendid effect that would have at. the conference table ot Great Britain and her Allies. Mr. A. W Fadden, Federal Prime Minister or Australia, in a speech over the air the other day made a strong appeal to Australia to close ranks and form - National Government.—l am, etc., G. F. MOORE.
