A SUMMARY OF THE SITUATION
Besides ■ surveying the war as a whole, Mr. Churchill s latest broadcast contained facts which had not been revealed before. He said that British intervention in Greece came near to inducing the latter’s neighbours to stand by her. Anzacs comprised half of the force sent to Greece. In speaking of the Battle of the Atlantic, he explained the new system of American patrols which would release more British naval forces for the protection of shipping routes nearer home. The speech has been received with great satisfaction throughout the Empire and in the United States. The Australian War Minister yesterday announced that the “evacuation of certain of our troops from Greece has begun and was progressing satisfactorily. The latest British communique told briefly of a continuation of the withdrawal before the German advance. the fall of Dessie, which is now announced, leaves the Italians in Abyssinia with only two remaining points of resistance. They suffered heavy losses in the fighting around Dessie. Two enemy mechanized columns and possibly a few other units have advanced from Libya into Egypt and are evidently threatening Sidi Barrani, about 40 miles from the frontier. Turkish newspapers for the first time are discussing the German menace and are commenting on the strategic meaning of the German capture of Greek islands off the Turkish west coast. The new British bombs have done exceptionally great damage in the latest raid on Hamburg. The Luftwaffe has attacked Portsmouth.
