OFFICIAL STATEMENT
The general policy of Labour Party candidates at the Wellington local body elections to be held on May 17 is summarized iu the following official statement by the Wellington Labour Representation Committee: —
“Labour stands for z tbe efficient control of the affairs of the city on a thoroughly democratic basis; for careful scrutiny rnd administration of the city’s finances; for fair and equitable apportionment of available funds to all districts; frn protection, conservation and development of city parks, beaches and other reserves; for the extension of children’s play areas at the appropriate time; for the provision of tepid swimming baths. Tlie Labour Party pledges itself to the extension of facilities for athletics and recreation ; for an assured and adequate water supply; for a more enterprising and businesslike policy In the electricity department, with a view to extending ths utmost service and benefits to tlie consumers; for the efficient co-ordination of tram and bus services. "Labour undertakes- to conduct a careful and thorough review of the city departments, with the object of eliminating useless expenditure and obtaining greater co-operation. Wise spending and husbanding of the city resources is the best economy. "Housing is a feature of Labour’s policy, and oae about which it has very positive views. It will aim at the es-> tablishment of a slum-clearing scheme and the erection of suitable dwellings lor • those displaced, and complete cooperation with the Government in house building. "Labour has proved its ability to administer the affairs of the Dominion, and this same ability is available and is offered to the citizens of Wellington for the administration of its civic affairs. ‘.’For the Hospital Board Labour pledges itself immediately to proceed with the of additional accommodation in Wellington and to provide adequate hospital facilities. Labour will co-operate with the Government to the fullest extent for the purpose of providing full hospital and medical benefits for ‘he people. “Labour will also continue the improvement of the port and harbour, with good conditions for'all workers. The president of the Wellington L. Mr. J. O. Johnson, said that the mayoral candidate, Mr. McKeen, M. and other candidates, would begin their campaign on Wednesday.
