INCENDIARY BOMBS

New Extinguisher Reported

1 (Received April 27, 7.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 26.

The development of a new and h'ighlyeffective extinguisher for incendiary bombs was announced today at the fire defence session of the annual Greater New York Safety Congress. Mr. Charles Durfee, of Pyrene Manufacturing Company, said the extinguisher was developed in a co-operative research carried out by the Dow Chemical Company, manufacturer of magnesium alloys, and the Pyrene Company. “For the first time,” Mr. Durfee said, “we have a material that will promptly and safely extinguish, burning magnesium, whether in industrial plants or when dropped by air raiders. It is known as Pyrene G-l fire extinguishing powder.”

U.S. STRIKE PROBLEM Effect On Defence Output

(Received April 27, 7.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 26.

Defence officials disclosed that a continuation of the coal strike will force 19 major arms plants to go on part-time operations within 48 hours and compel the steel industry to cut its operations to 85 per cent, next week. The New York “Herald-Tribune” reports that the employees in 60 out of 61 General Motors plants voted authorizing a strike, whereupon the Secretary of Labour, Miss Perkins, certified the dispute to the National Defence Mediation Board. General Motors employs 160,000 men in 61 plants and has 700,000,000 dollars worth of defence contracts. ' The * Seattle police announced that they had discovered a plot by criminal elements and saboteurs to close down the Boeing bomber plant and the Todd shipyards. The police have ordered the arrest of all suspicious persons on sight for investigation. Senator Byrd demanded in the Senate today that Miss Perkins be replaced as Secretary of Labour by “a twofisted man who will have the intestinal’ fortitude to say to both Labour and Capital that strikes in the preparedness industries cannot be tolerated.”

Senator Byrd said. “Miss Perkins has demonstrated her ineptness, weakness and inability to meet her responsibility in the settlement of strikes.”

LINDBERGH’S VIEWS

Sharp Criticism By

Roosevelt

WASHINGTON, April 25.

President Roosevelt today sharply criticized Colonel Lindbergh and others Who believe ’that the Axis will win the war and compared persons who hold that viewpoint to the “copperheads” of the Civil War days.

The President indicated that, because of his views on the international situation Colonel Lindbergh had not been recalled to active duty by the army.

These views, Mr. Roosevelt said, were held by only a small minority of the American people. He challenged the patriotism of this viewpoint and added that he was sorry that so many with this type of mentality were in positions of prominence to speak and write.

As for himself, and the majority of the' others, J[r. Roosevelt said that they were for the democratic process and were willing to fight for it. They did not want to lie down and accept conquerors.
