HOLDING OF PASS
Stubborn And Skilful New Zealanders
GERMAN ACCOUNT (Received April 25, 7 p.m. i LONDON, April 23.
The German news agency distributed an eye-witness account of the fierce and stubborn resistance of the New Zealanders before the Germans captured Larissa. It says that even the New Zealand wounded fired on the attackers. The New Zealanders had built up well-camouflaged and wellplaced positions in the Tempe Pass.
The terrain and their numerous antitank weapons gave them an advantage over the German force employed. On account of the narrowness of the pass there was just room for two tanks and a rifle company, and the New Zealanders, who were situated on both sides of the valley and in the mountains, tired on the attacking force. One New Zealand defence position after another was taken after fierce and stubborn fighting. The enemy defended himself skilfully and stubbornly. Another message from Berlin says that leading German war correspondents on the Greek front reported that the Anzae troops defended their mountain lines so stubbornly that German strategic manoeuvres to bring about an encirclement move failed.
