MOTOR-CAR STRUCK BY TRAIN
One Killed; Five Injured PARTY RETURNING FROM DANCE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, April 25.
The second fatal accident within four months on the railway crossing at Kennington, near Invercargill, occurred at 10.15 last night, when one of six occupants of a motor-car was killed and the other five injured by collision with a special goods train bound for Invercargill. All the men but one are connected with Southland racing stables, and were returning home from a dance. The car was caught broadside on by the cowcatcher and carried along the line about the length of the train before the engine was stopped, and the train had to be backed to disengage it. The victims were:— Killed.
George Hom, stable hand, employed by W. E. Hazlett. Injured.
George Barclay, aged 30, jockey, employed by R. E. McLellan. Stanley Murdoch, aged 19, driver. John O’Connor, aged 20, stable hand, employed by F. W. Ellis. Samuel O. Shaw, aged 16, apprentice jockey, employed by F. W. Ellis. Kevin R. Ford, aged 19, apprentice jockey, employed by W. E. Hazlett.
