McKENZIE BEATEN Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Tournament HAWKSWORTH’S GOOD WIN Dominion Special Service. MAiSTERTON, April 12. Play in the Wairarapa lawn tennis tournament commenced yesterday afternoon at the Winter Club’s courts at Masterton, and was continued today. Good progress was made with the various events, and some first-class tennis was seen by a small gallery. The highlight of the tournament has been a g/eat singles in which P. Hawksworth eliminated the Wilding shield player, R. McKenzie. The match commenced late in a rather poor light with a tricky wind blowing down-court. Hawksworth’s slashing forehand drive was functioning to perfection and its length and accuracy held McKenzie from obtaining an attacking position at the net. Hawksworth ran away with the first three games, dropped the next, took the next two, and finally ran out to win the set G-2, winning the final game from forty-love. As the second set commenced a very noisy motor-mow'er was started on the court immediately, behind McKenzie and this further unsettled him. After some delay it, was stopped, but Hawksworth took the first two games. An adverse foot-fault decision did not assist McKenzie’s effort to null the match out of the fire, but Hawksworth slackened the pressure and McKenzie drew level at four-all. The ninth game went to Hawksworth, and McKenzie made a desperate attempt to rally, but he could not get either length or accuracy. In the tenth game, Hawksworth had a match-point, but dropped it for McKenzie to draw up to deuce. He dropped another niatimpoint, but clinched the third to win the match in. two straight sets. The final score was G-2, G-4. The promising young Wellington player, J. Hamilton, opened up in fine style in his match against M. Perkins, and with clean, accurate volleys took the first set, 6-2. Ferkins, who was retrieving magnificently, took the second, 6-2, and the third set was a long, hard-fought struggle that finally went to Ferkins at 7-5. Hamilton’s form continues to improve. and he looks a likely candidate for Wilding shield honours next year. Another Wellington player, Bold, showed a nice array of strokes in his victory over G. McLeod in two sets. Play will continue on Monday. Results of the championship events are as follows• Men’s Singles. First round: A. M. MeCnrdle beat A. Bulliek, 6-3, 6-1; R. McKenzie beat N. Faulknor, 6-0, 6-4; P. Hawksworth beat R. Sharpe, 6-3, 6-0, 6-1; G. Goodwin beat F. Rlshworth, 6-1, 6-3; J. Hamilton bent J. ,T. Payton, 6-3, 6-0; M. Ferkins beat J. G. Swinburne, 6-2, 6-3; D. Goodwin beat G. H. croskery, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5; A. M. McCardle beat 11. Welpeihana, 6-0, 6-_. Second round: P. Hawksworth beat G. Goodwlu, 6-0, 6-1; Bold beat 0. Grant, 6-1,
