Hutt Play At Victoria

Five rinks from the Lower Hutt Bowling Club visited the Victoria Club, Wellington, on Saturday, and played for the Keith-Hendry loving cup. This was presented two years ago by Mr. Richard Wilson, Hutt Club, but the fixture, usually referred to as "Bill Hendry’s Picnic, has existed for 25 years without a break. The visitors were met at the I ictoria Club gates by Mr. Colin Campbell, an ex-president, in full Highland costume. Headed by Piper Angus Graham, the Hutt players were piped round the green. They were welcomed by Mr. W. M. Keech, on behalf of the president, Mr. Alfred Ward. Mr. M. Upton, president of the Hutt Club, replied. The skips of the rinks were, Victoria mentioned first: McKenzie v. bcott; Baudinet v. Fraser; Keech y. Teagle; Keith v. Hendry; and Norwood v. Davidson. ... , By an extraordinary co-ineidence each of the five games ended in the score being 13 all, The loving cup was handed over to the Victoria Club by the president of the Hutt Club, and was accepted by Mr. Keech, . There was. a social re-union when sir Charles Norwood proposed the health of Messrs. W. Hendry and J. Keith, the bowling friends of 40 years, who had been largely responsible for the fixture all through. , ; Mr. Hendry, in reply, said it was 4b years ago since he had joined the V ictoria Club, and his membership of the Hutt Club dated back 36 years, he being the only foundation member (continuous) left alive. . ~ .. . "Bill Hendry’s Picnic” had always been a stimulant to him in his old nge, and he hoped the fixture would continue, this year was his fiftieth as a bowler, and from the end of the season he would retire from any active part on the green. He had been nine years a member of a club in Timaru, mid for 41 years had been a member of the Victoria Club. The toast of the visitors, coupled with the names of Mr. Toni Lock (president of the Wellington Bowling Centre), mid Mr. S, Potter, was given by Mr. Marcus Marks. The toast of the Hutt Club was given by Mr. H. E. Combs, M.P., and replied to by Mr. Upton. Mr. Hendry presented Mr. Keith with a framed, poetical tribute written by a Hutt Club member on the occasion of Mr. Keith’s 85th birthday. . . There was community singing led uy Mr, H. F. Wood.
