AXIS ON THE JOB

Nazi Inquiry; Italian Threat REPLY EXPECTED SOON LONDON, March 27. An Associated Press message from Berlin says that the German Government has sent an urgent request to the Yugoslav Government asking them to explain the international implications 'of the Cabinet changes, specially so far as they affect Yugoslavia’s adherence to the Axis Pact. The message says that the hope was expressed in Berlin that the reply would reach i there tonight. 1 Authorities in Rome declared that | Yugoslavia is not freed from her obligations under the pact, and added that German troops in Rumania, Hungary, and Bulgaria would move into Yugoslavia if necessary and enforce adherence to the pact. The German and Italian .Ministers visited the new Government, which declared that it desires to maintain friendly relations with the Axis. The “Berliner Tageblatt” says that a Wilhelmstrasse spokesman stressed that the exchange of Notes which accompanied Yugoslavia's signing of the Axis Pact in no wise diminished its severity. Yugoslavia would be obliged to fulfil irrevocably all her obligations under the pact. The correspondent says that the Note Is in no way connected with the obligations of the pact, which is an independent instrument and cannot be altered, nor can concessions of : any kind be made. Greek Rejoicing. There were sensational scenes in Athens when word of King Peter’s coup was received. People literally tore special editions of the newspapers from the delivery vans. People poured from their homes, some cheering and some in tears, so great was their emotion.

It is felt in Athens that the whole situation in the Middle East has been transformed and that Greece, instead of being threatened along her whole northern frontier, can now contemplate the position without misgiving.
