WELLINGTON TROTS

Well-Balanced Fields

PROSPECTS FOR FINAL DAY

(By Overcheck.)

There is every promise, at the time of writing, of good weather for the concluding day of the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting, and with nice sized fields engaged in each race an excellent day's sport is assured. After the rain that has fallen the track is sure to be again on the dead side, so Thursday’s form should afford a good index to the chances of the respective contestants.

Special train and bus services will again be running, and these will provide rapid transport to and from the course. The public is reminded that today’s racing will begin at 11.30 a.m. instead of noon.

The card is as follows: — 11.30— RANDWICK. HANDICAP, of £200; 4.56 class. Two miles.

Jock McGrath scr Syntax 36 Native Ruler . 12 Danzie Guy .. 48 Renegade ... 12 Expensive Lady 48

Blonfielq .... 12 It should be noted that the distance of the Randwick Handicap is two miles, whereas the distance of the corresponding race on Thursday was a mile and a half, so that Danzie Guy should again go well, though he is now 48 yards behind scratch. From the point of view of speed Jock McGrath lacks nothing as compared with the others and he hns only to make a satisfactory beginning to be hard to beat notwithstanding that he failed to run on.on Thursday. This was probably • because after a bad beginning he raced to the front and then endeavoured to win all the way. Renegade should be improved by his outing on Thursday and may hold Native Ruler safe. Favourites may be Jock McGrath, Renegade and Danzie Guy. 12.12—

autumn NOVICE HANDICAP, of £175; 3.43 class. One mile and a half.

Shannon Lass . scr Recluse scr Catalpa scr Fulwood ... ser Joan conquest scr Kaulala .... scr Vera de Oro . ser Nightbenm ... ser Dublin scr Serapeum ... scr Serapeum, Fulwood and Night Beam are fresh horses in the Autumn Novice Handicap. The first-named ran second in the Rimu Handicap and third in the Dominion Handicap at Greymouth last Saturday. Fulwood has not yet raced at a totalizator meeting, and Night Beam has only raced once. . Of the others Thursday’s form points to Vera de Oro and Joan Conquest, and these two may be followed in the betting by Serapeum. 12.54— CARTERTON HANDICAP, of £225 ; 3.34 class. One mile and a half. Loch Levon .. ser Barbara Scott 12 Queen High .. scr Positive .... 12 Gleam • 12 Muster Potts . 24 Labour Chimes 12 Gold Chief ... 36 Heroic Prince 12 Those likely to receive most support in the Carterton Handicap are Barbara Seott, Gleam, Positive and Gold Chief, Here again there is an alteration in the distance from two miles to one and a half. This should be helpful to the chances of Barbara Scott, who stopped quickly over the last furlong on Thursday, when she covered a good deal of extra ground by reason of the position she occupied throughout. Gleam -was conceding Gold Chief 12 yards on Thursday, and the latter now has to concede Gleam 24, which makes the latter read as a good prospect. Positive showed extreme gameness on Thursday in winning the Belmont Handicap, but the company was not so good as that, he is now meeting. Still, he should go a good race. • Favourites may be Gleam, Barbara Scott and Gold Chief, who has a record of 3.17 at 12 furlongs. 1.36—

R A ARMSTRONG MEMORIAL HANDICAP, of £406: 3.24 class. One mile and a half. Lady Carol ... acr Toceetie .... 12 Special Edition scr Worthy Need . 12 Huguenot .... scr Superior Rank 12 Aspirant .... 12 Bold Venture . 36 Huguenot was unlucky in the running on Thursday but finished brilliantly to secure second money. Ou this form he is the logical favourite. Special Edition ran well on and looked the likely winner when he tangled and lost his chance. Aspirant made all the running on Thursday and should again race prominently notwithstanding her penalty of 12 yards. Worthy Need came home strongly the first day for third, while Superior Rank should be all the better for the outing. Probably most support will be accorded Huguenot, Special Edition and Worthy Need. 2.18—

PALMER HANDICAP, of £4OO ; 4.30 class. Two miles. Reception .... scr Franz Derby . 12 Mohiean .... ser Jenny Guy ... 12 Parrish ■ Guide scr Dark Hazard . 48 Blworthy . ...scr Gerfalcon ... 48 Tan John scr

The Palmer Handicap is a two mile event, whereas the corresponding race the first day was a mile and a half. It was generally believed that Gerfalcon needed a dry track but he handled the going better than any of the other runners on Thursday. Reception went her usual honest race, and now that she receives 48 yards from Gerfalcon she is likely to ibe hard to dispose of today. Tan John run second to Gerfalcon at Tirnaru when in receipt of 12 yards, and Parrish Guide, in receipt of 24 yards, was fourth. On Tirnaru form, therefore, Tan John is well placet]. Franz Derby has shown her best form at a mile and a half, and :uiother factor to be considered in her case is that she prefers dry conditions. When the machine closes it may be found that the best supported are Reception. Tan John and Parrish Guide.

OLAREVILLE HANDICAP, of £175; 3.5 class. One mile and a quarter. Shannon Lass . scr Native Loch .. scr Catalpa .... scr Kaulala .... scr Joan Conquest scr Nightbeam .. scr Vera de Oro . scr Serapeum ... ser Recluse scr Drift Wave ... 12 Special Agent . ser Special Agent will probably be the popular selection for the Clareville Handicap. He was not produced on Thursday and will come up a fresh horse. In his only ?tart to date he ran third to All Gallant and Dunkirk in the Wairewa Trot at Banks Peninsula. The field was very large, so there was a good deal of merit in the performance, specially as Festivity was fourth. Joan Conquest and Vera de Oro read best of the others. 3.42—

MEMBERS' HANDICAP, of £250 ; 4.43 class. Two miles.

Golden Mist .. scr Glen Travis .. 12 Marque 12 Agility 12 Warning ... 12 Oxford Scholar 24 Warship .... 12 Bronze Eagle . 72 The Members’ Handicap is another two mile race. The extra distance should suit Oxford Scholar and he may be accorded most support. The bracket —Golden Mist and Marque—raced well on Thursday and should again be in the money. Bronze Eagle outstayed the field on Thursday and the 48 yards penalty may not be be yond him. Still he has yet to prove his ability at two miles, and it is but seldom that a winner comes from so far back. There will be only two dividends, and so the public may prefer to stick to Oxford Scholar and (lie bracket. 4.24—

[I'AREWELI. HANDICAP, of £2OO : 8.33 class. One mile and a half. True Guide ... scr Kosha ...... 24

Falaise scr Milliard .... 24 Don Walla ... scr Surprise Potts 24 Battle Colours scr Scapa Flow .. 24 Festivltv • scr Dauz.lo Guy ... 24 Talak ' .... 12 Of those on scratch in the Farewell Handicap Festivity, after her comfortable win on Thursday, is sure to receive plenty pf support. Surprise Potts finished well to secure third money in the Belmont Handicap on Thursday, and is entitled to careful consideration. Of the others Fhlaise. who finished fourth on Thursday, may be in most demand.

TRAINS FOR AWAPUNI For tlie Wanganui Racing Club’s meeting at Awapuni on Thursday, April 3, and Saturday, April 5. the Railways Department is making special transport arrangements for the transport of patrons.
