THE FANTAIL'S BREAKFAST
(Original, by Mr. Toad (13), Feilding.) TT was early morning in the bush. Trees, shrubs and grasses glistened with dew. The air was filled with the scent of bush flowers and the song of distant native birds. Where the light filtered from higher trees upon a baby totara, a pied fantail—or piwa'kawaka, to give it its Maori name—searched for its morning breakfast. This way and that he twisted and turned, chirping wjien he caught a particularly juicy fly.
But as the sun rose higher and the dew ceased to glisten in beautiful colours, he flow' away, hopping and chirping, to the security of the interior of the bush.
