215 Prisoners; Ten Ships Sunk PLANT WRECKED Norwegian Patriots Brought Back
LONDON, March 6. Au Admiralty communique says the action against the Lofoten Islands off Narvik, on Tuesday was completely successful. Ten German merchant ships and one Norwegian ship under German control were sunk-. The island’s fish-oil plant was destroyed. Two hundred and fifteen prisoners were taken. A number of Norwegian patriots anxious to fight for their country were brought to Britain. The objective was threefold: first, to destroy the plant used in the production of fish oil, which is of value to the enemy for glycerine manufacture ; secondly, to destroy any German ’ ships in the locality; and thirdly to take prisoner the Germans on the islands who were controlling the industry, as well as the local Quislings. The largest ship sunk was a fullyladen vessel of 10,000 tons. The total tonnage was 18,000 tons. The Allied forces withdrew after achieving'their object and suffered no casualties. One German officer and six ratings were killed.
