LOOTERS IN ENGLAND

Heavy Penalties Imposed

LONDON, March 5.

Declaring that he and other judges were determined to stamp out looting, Mr. Justice Oliver sentenced six Sheffield looters to a total of 20 years and nine months’ imprisonment. “The law puts looters in the same category as murdei’ers, because it provides for the death penalty,’’ said Mr. Justice Oliver. “The day may be approaching when they will be treated as such. There are still some who do not appreciate the seriousness of looting. Many looters are operating on a wholesale scale. Two men abandoned wellpaid positions to take up the more remunerative one of looting.”
