MR. R. L. ANDREW
New Director Of Dominion
Laboratory
Mr. R. L. Andrew, F.1.C., Wellington, has been appointed Dominion Analyst and Director of the Dominion Daboratory. H 6 succeeds Mr. W. Donovan, who has retired. Mr. Andrew was born at Thames and received his early education at Thames High School. Having won a School of Mining scholarship, lie studied at the Otago School of Mines. Later he joined the staff of the Dominion Laboratory in 1906/the director at that time being the late'Dr. J. S. Maclaurin. During his 34 years of service, Mr. Andrew has accumulated a wide knowledge of all phases of the Dominion Laboratory’s activities, and in particular has taken a very important part on the laboratory side in the administration of the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. He has published a number of important papers on the analytical, chemistry of milk and the relation of iodine to the incidence of goitre in New Zealand, which have earned him wide recognition. The Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland elected him a Fellow in 1929. His official duties include that of chief gas examiner for New Zealand and membership of a number of technical and scientific committees. Mr, Andrew takes a lively interest in the welfare of the profession of chemistry and is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry and a past president of the New Zealand section of .the Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland.
