Border carnations are planted out in April. It is not too soon to prepare the plot to receive them. Remember, they must have a light, well-drained soil which has been given a dressing of lime a week or two in advance of planting. They react unfavourably to fresh manure, but really old stuff worked into the soil is beneficial. Cuttings of pinks taken earlier in the year should now be ready for planting out Soil requirements are similar to those recommended for carnations. Gladioli are now ripening rapidly; they can be lifted when the foliage turns yellow. When corms have dried, carefully remove the earth and cormlets and store them in a cool, dry place. The cormlets can be graded and set aside for early planting.
